Its weird to meet people on the internet in real life right?

I was chatting to a friend the other day who was looking to expand her dating horizons, she was toying with the idea whether or not to get Tinder. She decided to download the app and start chatting but when it came time to actually meet some of these people she refused to go. (& no before you ask it wasn’t me lol)

Not because she wasn’t interested but because meeting people online is weird right? Its desperate and only for single losers with no actual prospects.

Ah no, not even close. It’s for people who are no longer interested in going to Red Square every Saturday night, for people who are looking to meet a new circle of people or friends or yes, occasionally people who are just looking to hook up.

I get it, it used to be weird back in the day. The only people who actually met online friends were socially awkward loners who liked to get their creep on.

But honestly it’s not like that anymore, cut to 2016 and I have personally met tons of my internet friends in real life.

Don’t get me wrong you still need to keep your wits about you and keep basic safety awareness (like meeting in a public place etc) but safety aside, the actual act of meeting someone who you only know because you both have a wifi connection is no longer restricted to creepy loners, in fact, if you think about it, they kind of pioneered the way for the rest of us….

As you get older it’s harder to meet people, I’m not just talking about dating potential either, I’m talking about friendships too. After high school finishes we are pretty much restricted to meeting people through mutual friends and work colleagues.

Personally I’m a blogger, which means I put myself out there online on a daily basis for my own amusement and whoever else wants to stop by. Now when you’re a blogger you will inevitably come into contact with other bloggers, through events, workshops or prearranged catch ups.

So it’s totally normal for someone on Instagram or Facebook to message me and want to meet up, I’ve done it several times now and have made some really great friends out of it – friends I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet if I hadn’t gotten over the stigma of weird online relationships.

Whatever your motivation is there’s nothing wrong or weird about it, is actually so common it’s not funny, you’d be hard pressed to find a person who hasn’t had some sort of meeting online/ in real life situation these days.

I’m not saying we should all go and start messaging randoms’ looking to strike up a friendship but what I am saying is that if the opportunity does arise, if you do actually want to go, then don’t let some 2002 stigma get in your way. (Back in the day when we referred to it as ‘The world wide web” or if you knew your lingo ‘The Net’.

Meet in a public place, only divulge personal details and information you are happy to have out there and make sure you have a friend or family member aware of your plans… cause you know, internet people…… hehe

What about you, have you ever met a friend in real life after being introduced on the internet?
